Rajinikanth's 2.0 has got a flying start at the Tamil Nadu box office. The movie, which was released in 2D as well as 3D in the state, ran into packed houses in majority of the theatres across the state on its first day.
Released in over 670 screens, the advance booking had met with a stupendous response from the audience. Cashing in on the hype, most cinema halls in Tamil Nadu preferred having at least one show of 2.0. Whereas multiplexes almost dedicated all their screens for the multilingual film.
Leading multiplex chains like SPI Cinemas (110+ shows), PVR (90+ shows), AGS (80+), Rohini Cinemas (34 shows), INOX (34), Kasi Talkies (24), Devi (20) and Luxe (30+) had screened the movie. On an average, the shows had at least 70+ occupancy, as per the trade buzz.
Many cinema halls in Chennai registered unprecedented ticket sales. Rohini Silver Screens and Vettri Theatres sold over 20,000 tickets for the first day, while Mayajaal is believed to have registered 15,000+ footfalls.
As a result, 2.0 has got a good start in Kollywood. The early estimates say that the Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar-starrer has minted around Rs 17 crore. It means the movie has failed to beat the record of Sarkar, which grossed Rs 31.5 crore on the opening day.
Notably, 2.0 may have failed to beat the Baahubali 2 first-day record across the globe, but it has outperformed the business of SS Rajamouli's flick, which had raked in around Rs 11 crore in 2017.
In Chennai alone, 2.0 has raked in Rs 2.64 crore, beating the record of Sarkar, which had collected Rs 2.41 crore.
Here are the top 5 biggest openers in TN Before 2.0
