Director Shankar's sci-fi thriller 2.0 (Hindi version) starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar is set to surpass the opening day box office record of its 2010 prequel Robot (Hindi) which also featured Aishwarya Rai in the lead. However, it has failed to register a record-breaking numbers at the box office on the first day of its release for its Hindi dubbed version.
The movie, which boasts of larger than life visual effects and gravity-defying action sequences, has received mixed reviews from critics. However, it has got overwhelming response from audience across the country. Moviegoers were seen waiting in long ticket queues outside cinema halls to watch the morning shows starting from as early as 4 am.
2.0 Hindi version, for which Karan Johar has turned distributor in order to get a wider reach, has managed to acquire around 4,000 screens across the country considering Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar's huge fanbase in the Northern belt. The total screen count of 2.0 stands somewhere around 7,500 in India and over 2,500 overseas.
The prequel of 2.0 (Hindi version) had registered a record-breaking business of Rs 20 crore on the first day of its release at the box office.
There is huge expectation on 2.0 that it will break director SS Rajamouli's magnum opus Baahubali 2 (Hindi version) record of Rs 41 crore, but the Hindi version of 2.0 has collected Rs 20.25 crore on the opening day let alone reaching Aamir Khan's Thugs Of Hindostan opening day box office record (Rs 46 crore - Hindi version). However, it is still a massive start for 2.0 Hindi dubbed film at the box office.
"Non-holiday release... Non-festival period... Yet, #2Point0 takes a SUPER START... Keeping in mind the fact that it's a dubbed film + advance bookings opened very late, the biz is STRONG... Thu ₹ 20.25 cr. India biz. Note: HINDI version," Taran Adarsh tweeted.
The online movie leak on Tamilrockers may further slow down its pace at the box office. However, hardcore Rajinikanth fans have discouraged free downloading of the movie from the notorious torrent site which had earlier threatened to release the movie within hours after hitting theatres.
2.0 is now lagging behind other 2018 highest opening day Hindi grossers like Sanju (Rs 34.74 crore), Race 3 (Rs 29.17 crore), Gold (Rs 25.25 crore), Baaghi 2 (Rs 25.10 crore) and Satyamev Jayate (Rs 20.52 crore).
