Rajinikanth's 2.0 has struck gold at the Chennai box office but the movie might have to settle down at the second place in the list of all-time highest-grossing Tamil movies.
The trade trackers were expecting 2.0 to beat the lifetime-record of Kabali, which had collected little over Rs 24 crore, last week. However, the business of Rajinikanth-starrer completely dropped as it raked in Rs 11.03 lakh from 52 shows, while earning Rs 16.87 lakh from 60 shows during the weekend.
By the end of its fifth weekend, 2.0 has grossed Rs 23.38 crore and earning over Rs 62 lakh looks like an impossible task. Next week, Rajinikanth's Petta and Ajith Kumar's Viswasam will hit the screens and 2.0 will make way for Pongal releases.
2.0 had minted Rs 5.09 crore from 933 shows in its first weekend. The mixed reviews did not impact on its collection. In the next one week, the movie witnessed fantastic footfalls and took a 10-day total collection to Rs 18.20 crore.
Without much competition, 2.0 had made a decent collection and ended its third-weekend business at Rs 22.01 crore. The Christmas weekend saw the release of a few biggies that include Dhanush's Maari. Thus slowing down the collection of Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar-starrer.
By the end of the fourth weekend, 2.0 had taken its total tally to Rs 23.10 crore.
Shankar's 2.0 is a science fiction made with a mammoth budget of Rs 570 crore. Akshay Kumar is the antagonist, while Amy Jackson is the female lead in the flick.
