Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the Union Home and Law Ministry to fast track pending criminal cases against 185 Lok Sabha MPs.
Fulfilling the commitments made during the 2014 electoral campaigns, Modi on Thursday asked Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to go ahead with the pending criminal cases against politicians and settle them within a year, according to NDTV.
A research by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) revealed that 185 Lok Sabha (LS) members have been facing criminal charges. Out of the 185 members, 112 are facing serious criminal charges that includes attempt to murder, murder, crimes against women, kidnapping, communal disharmony.
BJP, which has 281 LS MPs, tops the list with 97 members facing criminal charges against them, out of which 61 have been charged with serious criminal offences.
While BJP MP Hansraj Gangaram Ahir from Chandrapur constituency, Maharashtra has been charged with "Kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage," another MP Joice George, independent from Idukki constituency in Kerala, has a case related to "assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty," the ADR report said.
The ADR report had earlier listed out some names of LS members charged with criminal offence, and here are a few names with serious charges against them:
