The ₹100 crore club has become a common place, but still only handful of Bollywood movies entered the club.
Last year, there were eight films that entered the century club and this year nine films have made it in it list. The first and second quarter, as usual, remained dull with only two films – Jai Ho and 2 States – earning slightly more than ₹100 crore.
The other seven films that earned over ₹100 crore were released in the third and fourth quarter.
The year's first big-budget movie was "Jai Ho" starring Salman Khan and Daisy Shah. The film was one of the most hyped films of the year, but the collection disappointed critics.
Salman's "Jai Ho", which became the first movie of the year to cross century mark, earned only ₹116 crore.
"2 States" starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt became the second movie of 2014 to cross the mark by earning ₹102.13 crore. Alia and Arjun made their debut in the elite club with "2 States", which is based on the popular novel by Chetan Bhagat.
Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha starrer "Holiday- A Soldier is Never Off Duty" had a decent performance, and in its lifetime run the film earned ₹112.18 crore.
Next film to score a century at the domestic box office was Sidharth Malhotra, Riteish Deshmukh and Shraddha Kapoor's thriller "Ek Villain".
The action-thriller not only garnered positive reviews, but also created magic at the box office. The film earned ₹105.03 crore in its lifetime run and with that Sidharth and Sharddha also made their debut in the club.
After "Ek Villain", Salman's "Kick" got released, and it took the box office by storm. The film not only crossed the ₹100 crore, but it also entered the 200 crore club.
In August, Ajay Devgn's "Singham Returns" was released, and it opened with a bang. However, the film failed to hold the same momentum, and it ended collecting only ₹140.62 crore.
The next film which hit the century mark was Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif's "Bang Bang", which was released in October. The romantic action movie earned ₹181.03 crore in its lifetime run.
In October, Shah Rukh Khan's "Happy New Year" was released, which also crossed ₹100 crore mark. The film had a fantastic opening, but the collection dropped from the second day itself. "Happy New Year", also starring Deepika Padukone, earned ₹202 crore from the domestic box office.
Last but not the least is Aamir Khan's "PK", which earned ₹100 crore in four days. The film, released on 19 December, continues to shatter records at the box office. The film, so far, earned ₹246.66 crore and its still running at the worldwide box office.
