At least three people died, including a woman and a child, and many remained trapped for hours after fire broke out at a hospital in West Bengal's Murshidabad district. Visuals from the Behrampur Medical College Hospital show a chaotic scene as patients were being escorted out of the premises.
A woman died after the fire broke out on the third floor. It happened in a room next to the children's ward and the woman who died was reportedly the caretaker of the children, NDTV reported. Two of the victims were hospital staff.
Patients broke windows to escape from the government hospital. The fire broke out in the medicine department of the hospital.
Fire tenders managed to douse the fire hours later. It had begun with a short circuit in the AC unit in one of the departments.
"A fire broke out in the hospital. Two causalities were reported. Fire has been brought under control. There is no need for panic," Chief Medical Officer of Health S. Saha said.
