Vijay's "Thuppakki" has lived up to expectations as it did well at the box office on the opening day, earning big even overseas, in spite of stiff competition from Bollywood biggies, "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" and "Son of Sardaar."
"Thuppakki," a Tamil action thriller directed by A. R. Murugadoss, was released in over 2,000 screens worldwide on Tuesday (Diwali) along with "Podaa Podi," starring Silambarasan and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar.
"Tamil film #Thuppakki is shining Overseas, despite the overpowering competition posed by #JTHJ and #SOS. Excellent!" tweeted trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh.
"Thuppakki" collected Rs 17.99 lakhs (A$ 31,567) from five locations in Australia in the first two days and Rs 48.66 lakh (£ 55,856) from 23 locations in the U.K., according to Taran Adarsh's tweets.
It is reported that "Thuppakki" had a great opening in Tamil Nadu with theatres running to full houses. A few websites even claimed that the film enjoyed 100 percent occupancy in most theatres in Tamil Nadu and did even better than Shah Rukh Khan's much-hyped, "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" that released on the same day.
"#Thuppakki - Diwali Release day - Nets an astonishing Rs 9.25 Crore approximately from TN. Extraordinary!" tweeted entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai.
The total collection of the film could swell up if revenues from all the 2,000 screens worldwide are added.
The official domestic box office report of "Thuppakki" is not out yet.
"Thuppakki" is an action thriller featuring Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal in lead roles. It is produced by Kalaipuli S. Dhanu and directed by A. R. Murugadoss.
