Reality television show mogul, Simon Cowell's worst fears came true on Thursday's episode of "The X Factor" USA, as his group was eliminated from the show.
Host Mario Lopez started the elimination round by announcing the first contestant advancing to next week's finale. He called out Carlito Olivero's name, to the delight of her mentor Paulina Rubio.
Carlito sang "Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber (audience's choice) and "I Need To Know" by Marc Anthony in the semi-finals. He shone in the rendition of "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard with Alex & Sierra.
The next contestant that made it to the finale was lovebirds Alex & Sierra. They sang "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men's (audience's choice) and mentor Simon's choice "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles in the semi-finals. Their emotional rendition of "Gravity" moved Demi Lovato to tears. They also sang "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard with Carlito.
The choice boiled down to Jeff Gutt and Restless Road, and only one could proceed to the finale. Lopez called out Jeff, who received a standing ovation from the mentors on both occasions in the semi-finals live performance.
Jeff sang the song, "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley (audience's choice) and "Demons" by Imagine Dragons. His rendition of "Demons" visibly moved his mentor Kelly Rowland, who couldn't hold back her tears. He also outperformed Restless Road while rendering "Every Breath You Take" by The Police.
Restless Road, consisting of Andrew Peter Scholz, Colton Lane Pack and Zach Ryan Beeken, sang Luke Bryan's "That's My Kind of Night" (audience's choice) and "Wanted" by Hunter Hayes on Wednesday. They joined Jeff Gutt in performing "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. Their performance was certainly not the best but it was good, earning the praises of the judges.
Simon Cowell had repeatedly said during the semi-finals live performance that the show wouldn't be the same without his boys but his group received the least votes from America, which came as a shock to their fans.
Going by the feedback of the judges and reaction of the audience after their live performance on Wednesday, Restless Road and Carlito Olivero were clearly under threat for elimination.
The top three finalists - Carlito Olivero, Alex & Sierra and Jeff Gutt - will perform live next week ahead of the announcement of the winner.
