Vijay's "Thalaivaa" still rocks the Chennai box office, despite the release of new films including "Thanga Meengal" and "Ponmalai Pozhuthu".
While "Ponmalai Pozhuthu" failed to impress audience, "Thanga Meengal" received rave reviews for its brave attempt. But the Ram-starrer has not been able to beat "Thalaivaa", a commercial entertainer starring Vijay and Amala Paul. "Thalaivaa" leads the Chennai box office, followed by "Thanga Meengal" and Hindi film "Satyagraha", according to senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai.

Even after two weeks, "Thalaivaa" continues to top the Chennai box office, thanks to Vijay's star power. The film made it to theaters in Tamil Nadu, 11 days after its original release on 9 August. The political drama flick had a dream run in other key Indian markets including Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as well as in overseas markets.
In Tamil Nadu, "Thalaivaa" had a fantastic start despite the film releasing on a weekday. The film had witnessed an average of 85 occupancy during weekends and 80 percent in week days in the first week of its release in Chennai. But it is slowly losing its momentum as the number of screenings has gone down in multiplexes.
In its second week at the Chennai box office, the film's occupancy in theatres was reduced to an average of 50 percent during the weekdays, whereas it was 65 percent in weekends, reported Behindwoods.
According to the website, "Thalaivaa" has minted around ₹6 crore in two weeks at the Chennai box office alone. The film's collections might decline in its third week when two new films - Siva Karthikeyan's "Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam" and Vishal's "Madha Gaja Raja" - will be released on 6 September to cash in on the Ganesh Chaturthi weekend.
