Vijay's film "Thalaivaa", which was released on 20 August in Tamil Nadu, is still being screened in some theatres across the state.

The release of "Thalaivaa" was delayed in the southern state due to some issues, but it opened to a fantastic start on the debut day.

The action-drama flick topped the Chennai box office in the first two weeks of its release. The film was dominating the screens as there were no big Tamil releases. "Thalaivaa" raked in over ₹6 crore in just two weeks at the Chennai box office.

However, the film's collections dropped significantly after that, due to new releases including "Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam" and other language films.

According to Behindwoods, "Thalaivaa" has collected a total of over ₹7 crore in three weeks (till 9 September) at the Chennai box office.

The Vijay-starrer had an average theatre occupancy of 80 to 85 percent during weekdays and weekends. Now, the number of screenings for the film has declined and theatre occupancy has also significantly dropped in its third week.

"Thalaivaa" had an average theatre occupancy of 35 percent during the weekdays, while it was 45 percent in weekends in the third week. "Thalaivaa" has dropped to the fifth position as some Hindi films seem to perform well in the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

According to latest reports, Sivakarthikeyan's "Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam" rules the Chennai BO, followed by Hindi release "Shuddh Desi Romance. Ram Charan's Telugu film "Thoofan" is in the third spot, whereas Ram's "Thangameengal" is fourth in the box office list. "Thalaivaa" takes the fifth spot and is likely to be out of the list in the coming weeks.

The film did good business in other states including Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It also collected better revenues from overseas markets, where the film was released on 9 August. "Thalaivaa" was a big hit in the UK particularly. However, the delay in its Tamil Nadu release has affected the total collections of the film. With reduction in the number of shows, the film will find it difficult to break even, reported Behindwoods.

"Thalaivaa" is about a common man (Vijay) who turns into a leader after the death of his father (Sathyaraj). The film has Amala Paul, Santhanam, Suresh, Ponvannan and Abhimanyu Singh in supporting roles.
