"Thalaivaa" starring Vijay and Amala Paul has reportedly collected ₹144 crore from domestic box office though the makers of the film and trade analysts are tight-lipped about the earnings of the controversial flick.
Produced by S. Chandraprakash Jain, "Thalaivaa" was released worldwide on 8 August along with Bollywood film, "Chennai Express" starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone but its release was delayed in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry after threats to theatre owners by a political outfit. It finally hit the theatres in the home state on 20 August.
Theatre owners have not made the official figures of the film's collection public but a couple of websites have claimed that the flick has earned more than ₹100 crore, excluding the collections from Tamil Nadu and overseas.
"Thalaivaa" earned ₹15.70 crore on the opening day and went on to rake in ₹10.52 on the 12th day and ₹9.60 on the 13th day, taking the total collection to a whopping ₹144.32 in 13 days, according to Metromasti.
Interestingly, the figures given out by Boxofficecapsule are different with its report claiming that the film earned ₹120 in 12 days. It said that the film earned ₹10.40 crore on the opening day and ₹7.00 crore on the 12th Day.
However, the box office reports published by several websites are not credible, and neither the filmmakers nor the theatre owners have revealed the exact figure. Several sections of the media reported that the film earned a little more than ₹20 crore in South Indian states - Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka - in 10 days. So, it looks like the collections of the film may not cross ₹100 crore.
"Thalaivaa" is an action thriller featuring Vijay and Amala Paul in the lead roles, and Ragini Nandwani, Rajiv Pillai, Santhanam and Sathyaraj in supporting roles. It tells the story of a simple man who turns into a leader.
