Naga Chaitanya's "Thadaka" has fetched ₹23.18 lakh in the first two days at the US box office.
"Thadaka", a remake of Tamil film "Vettai", is about the bonding between two brothers. The action entertainer features Sunil as Naga Chaitanya's elder brother. Actresses Andrea Jeremiah and Tamannaah play the female leads.
"Thadaka", which was released on 10 May, has opened to moderate response from film critics. After having a string of flops, Naga Chaitanya is back with "Thadaka", donning the role of a jobless rogue. The performance of the lead actors - Naga and Sunil - has won laurels from film critics.
The first day's collection of "Thadaka" was slightly over ₹6 lakh ($ 11,533) from 31 locations in the US, but the second day's collection (Saturday) was twice more than Friday's earnings. According to trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh, "Thadaka" minted $30,374 (over ₹16 lakh) on Saturday. Combining the two days' collections, the film's earnings totaled to ₹23.18 lakh.
"Telugu film #Thadaka *USA* Fri $ 11,533, Sat $ 30,374 from 31 locations [total: ₹23.18 lacs]," Taran Adarsh tweeted.
"Thadaka's" two-day earnings are much lower than what "Greeku Veerudu" fetched in the debut week. "Greeku Veerudu", which was released more than a week ago (3 May), features Naga Chaitanya's father Nagarjuna in the male lead. The film raked in $48,270 (3 May - Friday) and $ 55,995 (4 May - Saturday) from about 49 screens.
With no big Telugu film releases in the coming weeks, it has to be seen if "Thadaka" will be able to pick up and do well at the box office. Directed by Kishore Kumar Pardasani, "Thadaka" has an ensemble cast including Brahmanandam, Vennela Kishore, Raghu Babu, Rama Prabha and Jayaprakash Reddy.
