Suriya's "Singam 2" had a fantastic start in the overseas market during the first weekend.
"Singam 2", which was released on 5 July, received massive response in India as well as overseas.
According to reports, the film has fetched a whopping ₹26 crore nett in the first three days at the domestic box office. "Singam 2" also made good collections at the overseas markets including US and UK. While the Suriya starrer fetched ₹59.60 lakh from 14 screens during the first weekend at the UK and Ireland box office, it raked in ₹1.47 crore from 46 screens (reported screens only) at the US box office. The combined collections (US and UK) are pegged at more than ₹2 crore.
"Tamil film #Singam2 has fetched a rocking start... UK weekend: £ 65,806 [Rs 59.60 lacs] ... USA weekend: $ 241,926 [Rs 1.47 cr]," trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted.
"Singam 2" grossed more than the collections fetched by the recently-released "Theeya Velai Seiyanum Kumaru" in the US and UK markets. [Note: The screen count for these films varies].
"Singam 2" was released in more number of screens across India and overseas. In particular, the film was released in more than 140 screens in Kerala, which is probably the highest screen count for any Tamil film in the state.
The action entertainer is reportedly doing well in Telugu, but did not hamper the collections of Ravi Teja's "Balupu," which has already been declared a smash hit in India and US.
"Singam 2" has received positive response from other overseas markets including Malaysia and Singapore. If the film sustains its business in the first week, then it is likely to become a smash hit.
The film's team has already begun celebrating their success. A press meet was held on Monday (8 July) to announce "Singam 2" success. Apart from some of the film's cast members, the film's producers - Studio Green and Prince Pictures, invited top theatre owners and distributors who shared information about the film's collections and the response received from the audience.
While talking to the media, Suriya thanked them and said, "This success was a much-awaited one for me. In spite of not being a festival release, Singam-2 took the best ever opening. I admire and respect Hari as a film maker and proud to be his brother. I will be doing more films with him in future," according to Sify.com.
"Singam 2" is a sequel to the 2010 blockbuster of the same name. With the success of the sequel, it remains to be seen if the director-actor duo would work on the third part of the franchise.
