Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest release, "Ram-leela" featuring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone has turned into money spinner, earning over ₹100 crore from worldwide box office in less than a week.
"Ram-leela", which was made on an estimate budget of ₹35 crore, has earned ₹76.05 crore from domestic box office in six days, according to a report by Bollywood Hungama. Trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh had earlier tweeted that the film's overseas first weekend collection was ₹25.04 crore ($ 4 million), so the worldwide collections have crossed ₹100 crore mark.
"#RamLeela packs solid total [$ 4 million; Rs 25.04 cr] in opng wknd in Overseas. Highest grossing *first weekend* for *non-holiday* period," Taran had earlier tweeted. "Krrish 3" collected ₹24.86 crore ($ 4 million) and "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" (YJHD) ₹22.10 crore ($ 3.9 million) in the first weekend.
The worldwide collections of the film will increase further once the earnings from weekdays are added. Taran had earlier revealed that the film would be released in 51 screens across Germany soon.
According to Bollywood Hungama, "Ram-leela" earned ₹16 crore at the domestic box office on the opening day and went on to earn ₹17.25 crore (Sat), ₹19.5 crore (Sun), ₹8.75 crore (Mon), ₹7.70 crore (Tue), and ₹6.85 crore (Wed), taking the total collections from six days to ₹76.05 crore.
The film, which is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's epic love story "Romeo and Juliet", managed to make a good opening despite being dogged by controversies over its content and title.
The makers of the film changed the title of the film to "Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-leela" following an order by the Delhi High Court. A few controversial words were also replaced ahead of its release but screenings in a few theatres were cancelled on the opening day due to protests, affecting the collections.
