Sanjay Leela Bhansali's much-hyped film, "Ram-leela" earned nearly ₹2 crore at the box office in UAE-GCC from just 57 screens, according to latest reports.
"#RamLeela fetches outstanding start in UAE-GCC. Collects AED 1.05 million on 57 screens," tweeted trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh. AED 1.05 million is approximately ₹18 million (₹1.8 crore).
"Ram-leela" starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles was released in nearly 3,000 screens in India and 500 screens abroad (35 countries) on Friday (15 November).
The figures of domestic box office collections are yet to be out but it is expected to make a good opening despite Sachin Tendulkar's 200th and final Test match in Mumbai.
"#RamLeela is HUMUNGOUS at plexes. Evening and night shows are rocking. Single screens fairly good to very good. Expecting a solid Day 1," tweeted Taran Adarsh. BollywoodHungama had earlier reported that Ram-leela" has registered approximately 70-75 percent theatre occupancy in places such as Delhi, C.I. and U.P, while theatre occupancy in places like Rajasthan and Gujarat was much higher.
The romantic-drama film's advance booking was affected by legal issues ahead of its release on Friday but it reportedly made a good opening with the crowd expected to grow in the evening. The title of the film has been changed to "Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-leela" following an order by the Delhi High Court.
Hrithik Roshan's starrer "Krrish 3", which has been raking in huge revenues even in the second week, is unlikely to affect the collections of "Ram-leela", as it belongs to a completely different genre.
"Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela", produced and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's epic love story "Romeo and Juliet". Bollywood's last adaptation of the love story - "Issaq" - failed at the box office but Sanjay Leela Bhansali's version has received good response from critics.
