Jiiva's upcoming Tamil film "Endrendrum Punnagai" has been confirmed for a worldwide release on 20 December.
Actor-cum-producer Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is distributing the film under his Red Giant Movies banner, has confirmed the release date on micro-blogging site Twitter.
This could mean that the romantic-comedy entertainer will clash with Aamir Khan's much-awaited film "Dhoom 3", which is also set to hit screens on the same date.
"Dhoom 3", which has an impressive star cast including Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Katrina Kaif, is one of the most-awaited films of 2013. The film's teasers have created a lot of buzz among fans across the globe. Moreover, the "Dhoom" franchise has a good fan following in south India. Past releases in the "Dhoom" franchise have done good business at the box office.
On the other hand, "Endrendrum Punnagai" has an ensemble star cast that features Jiiva, Trisha Krishnan, Vinay Rai, Santhanam, Andrea Jeremiah and Nassar among others. The film, directed by Ahmed of "Vamanan" fame, has music composed by Harris Jeyaraj.
Both "Dhoom 3" and "Endrendrum Punnagai" belong to different genres. While the Aamir Khan starrer is an action-thriller flick, Jiiva's film belongs to the romantic-comedy genre.
For a film, its first weekend collections are very crucial. Considering that the two films are releasing around Christmas holidays, they are expected to take a good opening. However, it remains to be seen how both the films would perform in the following days.
Apart from the aforementioned films, Rajinikanth's "Kochadaiiyaan" is expected to release in December. Earlier reports had suggested that the film might hit the screens on 12 December, on the eve of Rajinikanth's birthday. If it does releases on the slated date, then it might affect the business of "Endrendrum Punnagai" and "Dhoom 3" as there would be a small gap between these releases.
As of now there is no official confirmation on "Kochadaiyaan" release date. Some industry people believe that the film's debut might be delayed further.
