Real Star Upendra's "Uppi 2" has got off to a flying opening at the box office. The movie ran to packed houses in Bengaluru and made stunning business in its first two days.
The buzz from the trade indicates that "Uppi 2" has approximately made Rs 3.25 crore on the release day. This is a big number for a Kannada movie, as few films, such as "Sangolli Rayanna" did such business on opening day.
The business saw a growth on Saturday due to Independence Day. As a result, the Kannada flick earned Rs 3.60 crore on the second day. The two-day total business stands at Rs.6.85 crore.
The figures are tentative, not official, as the makers are yet to make a formal announcement; they are expected to reveal the box office details after the first weekend.
It is a remarkable achievement for a movie, which was not publicised much by the makers of the movie. Generally, big banner films are well promoted on visual medium, with promoters spending anywhere between 10 to 20% of the total budget on promotions.
But in case of "Uppi 2", Upendra did not publicise the movie on any platform except on social media. Yet, the film has turned out to be the talk of the town, driving movie buffs to theatres. There is also a buzz that the movie could recover its production cost in the opening weekend itself.
The movie opened to mixed reviews. While the concept and Upendra's acting have been praised to heavens, the execution has been criticised, as it is low on the entertainment quotient.
"Uppi 2" is a sequel to the director-turned-actor's 1999 cult classic named "Upendra". It features Kristina Akheeva in the female lead role and Parul Yadav has done an extended cameo in the movie. Bank Janardhan, Biridar and Shobaraj are also in the cast.
