The Tamil movie was expected to get a fantastic reception worldwide. But the financial issues that hit the movie just before the release played spoilsport to some extent as early morning shows were cancelled.
Nonetheless, the occupancy has been almost cent percent at theatres in Chennai and above 90% in other parts of Tamil Nadu. As per the reports, "Puli" has raked in Rs 10.75 crore in Tamil Nadu with a nett. business of Rs 8.60 crore. It means that the Kollywood movie has failed to beat Vijay's previous record of "Kaththi", which had grossed Rs 12.5 crore on the release day.
"Puli" has also done well in Karnataka and Kerala. The early projection says that the Tamil movie has made Rs 2.10 crore (Rs 1.75 crore nett.) and about Rs 1.75 crore (Rs 1.40 crore nett.) in both the states. The total collection made by the movie in India comes close to Rs 16 crore (approximately.)
"Puli" has been released in close to 450 screens worldwide. "Puli" is expected to have done well at the US, UK and Malaysia where the movie have released in 102, 58 and 93 screens respectively. It is estimated that the movie has raked in about Rs 4 crore from international centres to take its global first day gross to Rs 20 crore.
However, the Telugu version and Hindi versions did not release on Thursday. The delay in the release has cost the makers several crore. The two versions are likely to release on Friday, 2 October.
Meanwhile, "Puli" has been opened to mixed reviews from the audience. Though the performances of the lead actors and rich visuals have been appreciated, the weak screenplay has come under severe criticism.
In order to make profits, "Puli" should perform exceptionally well in the first week.
