"Paayum Puli" being released at the same time as Jayam Ravi's "Thani Oruvan" has turned out to be a disadvantage for the Vishal Krishna starrer.
In its opening weekend, "Paayum Puli" earned Rs 6.5 crore, which is quite an achievement for a Vishal starrer. After having a good opening on Friday, the business reportedly saw a minor dip on Saturday to only recover on Sunday.
However, the traders feel that this Tamil film could have performed even better if Jayam Ravi's "Thani Oruvan" film was not in theatres.
The good word-of-mouth for "Thani Oruvan" has boosted the collection of the film and at the same time affected "Paayum Puli". After making Rs. 27+ crore in its first week (7 days), Jayam Ravi and Nayantara's flick earned Rs 13.5 crore in its second weekend. In the first weekend, it had earned Rs 14 crore.
Now, the total business of "Thani Oruvan" by the end of 10 days stands at Rs 40.50 crore. The movie is expected to reach the Rs 50-crore mark by the end of its two-week run in theatres. The major advantage that this film had was the 30% entertainment tax exemption that it received for getting clean 'U' certificate from the Regional Censor Board.
"Thani Oruvan" stars Jayam Ravi, Arvind Swamy and Nayantara in the lead roles. It is directed by Jayam Raja. The biggest target for this film will be to reach Rs 100-crore mark at the domestic box office.
On the other hand, "Paayum Puli" opened to mixed reviews. It will be a big challenge for this Vishal Krishna starrer to maintain the momentum and to face "Thani Oruvan", which is turning out to be a surprise winner at the box office like "Kanchana 2".
"Paayum Puli" stars Vishal and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles. The movie is written and directed by Suseenthiran.
However, "Thani Oruvan" and "Paayum Puli" are doing equally well at overseas centres. While Jayam Ravi's film performed better than Vishal Krishna's flick in the US, Suseenthiran directorial outperformed Jayam Raja's film in Malaysia.
