Nagarjuna and Karthi-starrer Telugu movie "Oopiri," which was simultaneously made in Tamil as "Thozha," has continued to do well at the U.S. box office. It has now crossed the $1-million mark.
Leading trade tracker Taran Adarsh announced the news on Twitter, and wrote: "As you read this, Telugu film #Oopiri crosses $ 1 million mark in USA. Total at 2 pm IST: $ 1,005,739 [₹ 6.67 cr]. Still counting! @Rentrak. [sic]"
"Oopiri" has become the 17th Telugu movie to earn more than $1 million in the U.S. This is Nagarjuna's second movie after "Manam" to have achieved this feat.
The multilingual movie had earned $76,635 from the Thursday premiere show. The good response to "Oopiri" boosted the collection of the film the following day, as it earned $210,281 Friday. Then, it saw a huge jump Saturday, by making $361,247.
Taran Adarsh tweeted: "Telugu film #Oopiri does PHENOMENAL biz on Sat in USA. Climbs to No 11 on USA charts [Fri was No 14]. MASSIVE weekend total on the cards... If one looks at the growth in biz, Telugu film #Oopiri grew 70.95% on Sat when compared to Fri. A rarity for even Hindi biggies in USA... [sic]"
"Oopiri" ended its first weekend on a high note by collecting $904,366 (Rs 6.02 crore). The film earned $58,306 Monday to take its tally to $965,085 [Rs 6.42 crore].
Trade experts are now predicting "Oopiri" will beat the record of Nagarjuna's previous, "Manam," of collection $1.5 million in the U.S.
Meanwhile, its Tamil version is doing well at the domestic box office. "Thozha" has earned Rs 8.15 crore in its first weekend. The flick is holding well on weekdays as well. Journalist Sreedhar Pillai tweeted: "Mid Week B-O : #Thozha steady especially in 3C's - Chennai, Chengalpet & Coimbatore. Trade feels, a safe bet till next big release on Apr 14. [sic]"
