Telugu movie "Oopiri," starring Akkineni Nagarjuna and Karthi, made decent collection at the U.S. box office in its second weekend. It has become the eighth-highest-grossing Telugu movie of all time in the country.
"Oopiri" collected $1,078,399 (Rs. 7.16 crore) from 133 screens at the US box office in its first week. Some trade analysts in Tollywood had predicted the new Bollywood release "Ki and Ka" would force the Telugu movie out of many cinema halls in the country, and would slow down the its collection by becoming the first choice for many audience there.
To everyone's surprise, the Vamsi Paidipally-directed movie managed to retain over 130 of the screens it had had in its opening week. But as predicted, "Oopiri" did witness a huge drop in its collection. When compared to its opening weekend, the movie has shown over 40 percent dip in its business in its second weekend.
"Oopiri" has collected $306,827 from 130 screens at the US box office in the second weekend, with a per-screen average of $2,360. The movie has landed in the second place, while "Ki and Ka" topped the U.S. business chart for Indian movies with its opening weekend collection of $367,387 (Rs. 2.44 crore) from 128 screens. Its 10-day U.S. total stands at $1,385,179 (Rs. 9.15 crore).
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted: "Telugu film #Oopiri continues its DREAM RUN. Crosses ₹ 9 cr from USA alone. Collects $ 306,827 in Weekend 2, which is FANTASTIC... Telugu film #Oopiri - USA - Week 2: Fri $ 89,211, Sat $ 149,012, Sun $ 68,604. Grand total: $ 1,385,179 [₹ 9.15 cr]. SUPER! @Rentrak. [sic]"
The Nagarjuna, Karthi and Tamannaah-starrer has beaten the the lifetime collection of "Baadshah," "Son of Satyamurthy" (SOS) and "Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu" (SVSC). "Oopiri" has become the eighth-highest-grossing Telugu movie at the US box office. The movie is likely to beat the records of "Aagadu" and "Bhale Bhale Magadivoi" and land in the sixth spot by the end of its second week.
