MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, which opened on a grand note on September 30, collected a massive amount on its opening day at the Indian box office. The film has become the second highest box office opener of the year, after Salman Khan's Sultan.
Released in over 3,500 screens in India, and a total of 4,500 screens in 60 countries, thereby making it the widest release for any Indian film, the film collected Rs 21.30 crore on its first day in the domestic market. "#MSDhoniTheUntoldStory takes a THUNDEROUS start on Day 1... Emerges the 2nd HIGHEST OPENER of 2016... Fri ₹ 21.30 cr. India biz," Taran Adarsh tweeted.
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, starring Sushant Singh Rajput, beat the first day box office collection record of Shah Rukh Khan's Fan and Akshay Kumar's Housefull 3 and Rustom. However, it has failed to surpass Salman Khan's Sultan, which is the biggest opener of 2016 until now.
Trade experts had already predicted that MS Dhoni: The Untold Story will have a terrific start at the box office and will register a big number on its opening day.
The film had created a massive buzz since it centres on the journey of Mahendra Singh Dhoni from working as a ticket collector to becoming the captain of the Indian cricket team. It also highlights the struggles and lesser-known facts about the Indian skipper's life before he attained success as a cricketer. Sushant too has delivered a stupendous performance and his portrayal of Dhoni has impressed the audience.
The film has, of course, successfully drawn thousands of Dhoni fans to theatres. But even non-cricket fans are queueing up to watch what the untold story of Dhoni is.
With this huge collection, the film is expected to break a few box office records within the first week itself. Also, since no big tickets are getting released over the next few weeks, it is likely to enjoy a good run for the next fortnight or so.
Directed by Neeraj Pandey and produced by Arun Pandey and Fox Star studios, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story also stars Kiara Advani as Sakshi Dhoni, and Disha Patani and Anupam Kher in the other key roles.
