Rajinikanth starrer "Lingaa" has set a new record for a South Indian film at the worldwide box office.
"Lingaa" has minted ₹37 crore on the opening day worldwide. The film minted approximately ₹12.8 crore on the first day in Tamil Nadu and its collections from AP/Nizam area amounts to ₹5 crore. The Rajinikanth-starrer is said to have earned ₹1.6 crore in Kerala , ₹2.1 crore in Karnataka and ₹0.50 crore in the "Rest of India." It has earned approximately ₹22 crore in India, according to Andhraboxoffice.
"Lingaa" performed exceptionally well in the overseas markets where it is estimated to have earned ₹15 crore. Its worldwide collections (opening day) stand at ₹37 crore. The Rajini-starrer has created all time day-one record in Tamil Nadu, Rest of India and overseas.
The action entertainer has managed to enter the top five Indian films with highest day one collections. The other four films include Shah Rukh Khan's "Happy New Year," Ajay Devgn's "Singham Returns," Hrithik Roshan's "Bang Bang" and Salman Khan's "Kick."
"Lingaa" is doing fantastic business in the US. After minting over $400K through premiere shows, the film continued to rock at the US box office. It has minted $806,910 in just two days and has entered the list of top five all-time Tamil grossers in the US. It has surpassed "Kaththi" and "Kochadaiiyaan" total collections and is all set to join the $1 million club soon.
"#Lingaa continues to rock USA box office. $806190 in 2 days. Already in top 5. Will surely end in top 2," tweeted ATMUS Entertainment, the distributors of Tamil films in the US.
"Lingaa" is likely to end the opening weekend on a strong note, but it needs to be seen as to how the film fares in the coming days considering it has got average reviews from the critics and the audience alike. There are no big releases until 19 December and "Lingaa" is expected to dominate the screens till then.
Directed by KS Ravi Kumar, "Lingaa" is a commercial entertainer with Rajinikanth appearing in dual roles. Sonkashi Sinha, Anushka Shetty, Santhanam, Karunakaran and Jagapathi Babu are also part of the film's cast. AR Rahman has composed the songs, while Rathnavelu has handled the cinematography. The film is produced by Rockline Venkatesh and distributed by Eros International.
