Virat Kohli took most of the batting honours while being named the MVP of IPL 2016 as well, but the RCB captain will rue the fact that the most important trophy of them all eluded him and his team, once again. On course for a wonderful IPL title, after a blazing start from Chris Gayle, it all went pear-shaped in a hurry for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, as the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers and fielders held their nerve in the end to script a fabulous win.
Kohli, though, for his record-breaking season, in which he scored a staggering 973 runs, of which there were four hundreds, took quite a few of the season-ending awards. David Warner finished second in the runscoring stakes, well behind Kohli, on 848 runs, even if those 848 runs proved to be one of the real reasons behind the title for SRH.
"It is a nice incentive, but it does not feel good to be at the other side of the result," Kohli said after accepting his awards. "I knew I was hitting the ball well and I just wanted to keep contributing.
"I surprised myself a little, with the amount of (hundreds I made), but I opened the innings, and I was a little fortunate in the end. I was also surprised at the amount of sixes I hit (the most in the tournament), but I just want to congratulate the Sunrisers Hyderabad for their win, they are deserved champions."
Bhuvneshwar Kumar took the Purple Cap for most wickets in the tournament with 23, edging out RCB's Yuzvendra Chahal and Shane Watson, who had 21 and 20 each.
The easiest award to give out was the Emerging Player of the Tournament, which went to the death overs rockstar Mustafizur Rahman.
