Two women committed suicide in the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) campus on Wednesday. One of the deceased was a research scholar.
P Maheswari, a 34-year-old post-doctoral research scholar in Chemistry, hailed from Puducherry. She was found hanging in her room in the Sabarmati Hostel on the campus. She was married, the police was quoted as saying by the Hindu.
In another incident, 47-year-old Vijaya Lakshmi, wife of a professor called Ganesan, was found hanging in their flat on the campus on Wednesday.
Investigation is underway regarding the reason for suicide. However, the police doubts that "family issues" forced them to take their lives.
Their bodies have been sent to Government Royapettah hospital for post-mortem.
"IIT Madras reports with deep sadness the death of a post-doctoral research scholar in the campus. The scholar's family has been informed. The institute extends its deep felt condolences to the family and the near and dear ones of the scholar for the unfortunate, untimely and devastating loss," IIT Madras said in a statement, according to NDTV.
