Australia captain Steve Smith took all the widespread criticism upon himself after being inflicted a whitewash of series losses against South Africa in the ODIs and the Tests earlier this year. He made sure to brush aside those criticisms with an impressing performance in the Chappell Hadlee Trophy 2016 against Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand.
Smith took the final catch of the New Zealand innings to dismiss Trent Boult in the third and last ODI of the three-match series against the Black Caps on Friday at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Prior to that, there remained yet another sensational knock from the veteran southpaw David Warner for the home team. The 30-year-old scored 156 off 128 balls on Friday to inspire his team to post a 265 run target in 50 overs. Warner scored a total of 299 runs from their three matches, to average an outstanding 99.66 runs.
The ones who stayed witness to his innings on Friday definitely marvelled at the combination of strokes he played towards reaching his ton, while some also remained a bit curious about his celebrations following the century.
Warner rose and took a leap, referred to as the 'Toyota leap' and then, he celebrated by raising his right arm in the air and bringing his left hand to his chin, when still holding on to his bat. The 30-year-old calls it his transformation from the uncontrollable 'Bull' to the honorary 'Reverend', a term usually associated with Anglican archbishops and Roman Catholic bishops.
"It's just a bit of an in-house joke. The boys call me The Reverend now because they reckon The Bull's been tamed a little bit," Warner joked and mentioned to Wide World of Sports after his innings in Melbourne.
