Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama said: "Set in Gujarat, GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA is SLB's most 'commercial' film as a director. Also, his best work so far. Undoubtedly! It's the kind of film that you carry back with you. The hi-octane drama, the blazing guns, the passionate romance, the haunting melodies, the heart-melting emotions... SLB is an exceptional director with a remarkable vision and GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA only bolsters the actuality.
"Agree, we have witnessed Shakespeare's adaptation of 'Romeo and Juliet' innumerable times in the past, but SLB makes sure the execution of the written material -- also the way the screenplay [Siddharth-Garima and SLB] progresses -- is way diverse from similar storylines helmed by dream merchants here.
"On the whole, GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA ought to be watched for multiple reasons: the electrifying chemistry between its lead actors, the strong dramatic content, the scintillating musical score, the violent streak in the narrative and of course, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's execution of the material. This is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's most accomplished work to date. It's a work of outstanding artistry. No two opinions about it. A masterpiece by the master craftsman Sanjay Leela Bhansali!"
Meena Iyer of The Times of India said: "What new can a filmmaker do with William Shakespeare's classic love story Romeo and Juliet? The answer is, if you are Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is technically sound and artistically astute as far as art and craft go, you just become impudent, set the story in Gujarat, sign Bollywood's currently best actress Deepika Padukone (Leela), team her up with 'I've-got-fire-in-my-loins' actor Ranveer Singh (Ram) and then let them loose on one another.
"So bullets fly, blood flows and bahus become victims of evil design. In between this warfare, Deepika and Ranveer touch, feel, kiss and cuddle and ensure you can feel their stirring. Quite unabashedly, the filmmaker uses his lead pair's real and reel chemistry, fuses it with sexual tension and makes it compelling for you to partake in their love-hate relationship. For the most part, Ram-Leela, SLB's most commercial work till date, has nice doses of raunch and ras (juice).
"Deepika is breathtaking and in top form. Ranveer displays his six packs and histrionics with fair ease. This could be the start of his journey into superstardom. You have to also applaud Richa Chadda and Supriya Pathak Kapur for being the talent they are."
Mohar Basu of Koimoi.com said: "The invigorated chemistry of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. There is exhilarating energy, passion, thrill and romance in what they share onscreen. The film in its second half does get tedious and makes you queasy.
"Bhansali has forever reveled in his esoteric world. Reigning as the master of films with operatic feel in Bollywood, Ramleela is one of India's most novel take of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. There is an alluring magic in the film that will enchant you. The primary reason why you shouldn't miss this one is because of Ranveer and Deepika's wonderful and visceral chemistry. It is quite a daunting affair to encapsulate the nuances of love's wilderness and Ramleela epitomizes the menacing feral love between its lead characters with poise and ease.
"Sanjay Leela Bhansali still masters his marvel at making magical films. Picking up an unoriginal and much beaten about idea, he mystically tweaks out a work of genius. Indefatigable and supremely engaging, the film despite its ostentatious feel is at core a fierce love story enacted effectively by Ranveer and Deepika. Putting up an astonishingly prodigious chemistry, the duo pull through the film with might."
Sneha May Francis of Emirates 24/7 said: "Bursts of colours fill the frame as a young man and woman lock eyes, while flirting with their weapons - one a loaded revolver, the other a loaded water gun.
"There have been exceptions like 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak' and 'Ishaqzaade', which adapted Shakespeare's love story sincerely, so Sanjay's 'Ram Leela' isn't novel in thought, but he has tweaked it with incredible passion and intensity, making it one of the most befitting adaptations ever.
"And, he's got the ravishing Deepika Padukone and the boisterous Ranveer Singh to thank for making this epic love story soar to great heights.
"Sanjay and writers Siddharth-Garima have flavoured it with such ferocity and flamboyance making it deeply invigorating. There's Sanjay's trademark opulent sets and extravagant dances (an item number even), but those speed-breakers do not dilute Ram or Leela's fiery romance, which unfold in a land notorious for its trigger-happy people.
"Cinematographer S Ravi Varman textures and tones the Ram-Leela love affair with immense colour, unlike Sanjay's earlier gloomy tales 'Guzaarish' and 'Black'.
"While Sanjay's indulgent script, which runs into two-hours-and-thirty-five-minutes might appear a bit tedious, we forgive him because what he eventually spins out is an enchanting love story."
