An Indian-origin youth, Sunil Tripathi, has been wrongly identified as the suspect in the Boston Marathon Bombing case, according to various media reports.
Twenty-two year-old Tripathi, who had gone missing since 16 March, and another man, Mike Mulugeta, were named as suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, according to a Reddit thread.
However, the real suspects have been identified as Chechnyan brothers Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev from Russia.
"A law enforcement intelligence bulletin obtained by the AP identified the surviving suspect as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev (JOE-khar Tsahr-NEYE-ev), 19, of Cambridge, Mass," Associated Press reported.
After the false reports surfaced online, Twitter users called for those who said that Tripathi and Mulugeta are suspects. People also asked them to apologise to the missing youth's family for giving out incorrect information. Many also suggested filing a legal case against those who claimed that Tripathi and Mulugeta are the suspects.
@CoderBee: The suspect #2 IS NOT Sunil Tripathi. IS NOT. Just performed a retweet-undo and deleted a reddit link I had tweeted which said so.
@CrazyDeewana: Shame on Reddit for suspecting innocent Sunil Tripathi who has been missing since last month and perplexing his family without any evidence.
@franhalderdaone: Imagine if a citizen of Boston saw Sunil Tripathi and decided to take the law into their own hands. Another innocent dead...
@PurpleDaemon: Well, what an ordeal the family of Sunil Tripathi has had to go through. And for nothing. The internet, ladies and gentlemen.
@icebureau: sorry make that the entire MSM and lots of twitter, as well as reddit, owe sunil tripathi & his family that apology. #manhunt
@VforVajayjay: Sunil Tripathi is NOT a suspect for the Boston bombings. What a surprise, innocent Muslim presumed guilty and subject to mass condemnation.
Tripathi is a student from Brown University. He went missing last month and police authorities and his family had raised all efforts to trace him. Tripathi, who was raised in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, was living in an apartment in Providence with his friends.
