Suriya's "Anjaan" has taken a humungous opening at the Indian and international box office.
The film has minted approximately ₹10 crore from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka states, and has become Suriya's best ever opening in his film career.
"#Anjaan - Gargantuan opening in TN, Kerala, Karnataka - Day 1 (Aug 15) Rs 10 Crore (approx), area wise break up later. #Suriya's best ever," according to entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai.
"Anjaan" has also performed exceptionally well in key overseas markets. The film has minted ₹41.59 lakh and ₹22.82 lakh from the UK and Australia box office, according to film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
"Tamil film #Anjaan – UK: Fri £ 40,859 [Rs 41.59 lacs]. Note: 7 screens yet to report. Source: Rentrak," Adarsh tweeted.
"Tamil film #Anjaan – Australia: Fri A$ 40,150 [Rs 22.82 lacs]. Note: Highest screen average on Fri. Source: Rentrak."
The Telugu dubbed version of "Anjaan", titled "Sikindar," too has taken good openings as there was no competition from other big Telugu releases. The film is estimated to have earned around ₹4 crore gross from AP/Nizam areas. The Suriya starrer has taken the biggest opening ever for a non-Rajini Telugu dubbed film, reported Andhraboxoffice.
Directed by Lingusamy, "Anjaan" is touted to be a revenge drama with some mass elements. The film has Suriya appearing in two characters – Krishna and Raju Bhai. The action entertainer also has Samantha, Soori, Vidyut Jamwal, Manoj Bajpai and Dalip Tahil in supporting roles.
The gangster flick, which has been released in more than 1,000 screens worldwide, is produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Thirrupathi Brothers.
"Anjaan" received mixed reviews from the critics as well as from the audience. Although Suriya has done a commendable job, weak script has let the film down, said the critics.
Despite mixed feedback, "Anjaan" took a big opening owing to advance booking and Independence Day holiday. The film is likely to end the first weekend on a grand note. But, it remains to be seen as to how the action entertainer fares during the weekdays.
