"Thalaivaa" is running successfully across theatres in India as well as overseas markets.
The Vijay-starrer, which was released on 20 August in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has opened to a good start at the box office. However, the opening day figures of "Thalaivaa" are yet to be announced.
Let's see how "Thalaivaa" fared in other Indian states and overseas markets. The action drama flick hit screens 11 days (9 August) ahead of its release in Tamil Nadu and is doing good business.
Kerala: "Thalaivaa" had a thunderous opening in Kerala raking in ₹1.12 crore from 120 screens, according to senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai. The film was preferred over other Malayalam films as well as Hindi film "Chennai Express." During the first weekend, "Thalaivaa" minted approximately ₹2.5 crore.
But the collections dropped after the first weekend. According to Behindwoods.com, "Thalaivaa" likely earned close to ₹4 crore in ten days of its release. The film which was topping the Kerala box office has been pushed down to the third spot. Kunchako Boban's "Pullippulikalum Aattinkuttiyum" has dominated the Kerala box office during the Independence Day weekend (15-18 August), whereas Prithviraj's "Memories" has taken the second spot.
However, "Thalaivaa" has performed better than Shah Rukh Khan's "Chennai Express", which has been doing extraordinary business in other places.
Karnataka: Vijay has a huge fan following in this state. Particularly, the delay in "Thalaivaa release in Tamil Nadu has been a boon for theatres in Bangalore, which saw throngs of Vijay's die-hard fans queuing up to watch the film. Despite facing stiff competition from other-language releases, "Thalaivaa" rocked the box office.
According to reports, the combined collections of the film's Tamil and Telugu versions was pegged at ₹5.7 crore, with a distributor's share of ₹2.7 crore, at the end of the first week.
Andhra Pradesh: The Telugu version "Anna" had a grand release in around 275 screens across Andhra Pradesh, thanks to no big Telugu film releases. The number of screens has now been reduced to about 55. However, "Anna" performed well at the AP box office and is expected to have fetched around ₹3.5 crore in 10 days of its release.
International markets: "Thalaivaa" has done good business in key international markets including US, UK and Malaysia.
In particular, the film has scored big at the UK box office. According to film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh, "Thalaivaa" has earned around ₹2.09 crore at the end of the second weekend. The film has already been declared a hit in the UK markets.
Tamil Nadu: A major chunk of "Thalaivaa" collections will be from Tamil Nadu, which plays a significant role in deciding the film's fate. Despite releasing on a weekday (20 August), "Thalaivaa" apparently had a fantastic opening in the state.
According to trade analyst Trinath, "Thalaivaa" is said to have collected between ₹5 crore and ₹10 crore on its debut day. The film's business is expected to soar in the next few days as there are no big Tamil releases.
