"Chennai Express" director Rohit Shetty is all set to remake the Tamil crime-comedy drama "Soodhu Kavvum" ("Evil Engulfs") with Imran Khan in the lead.
Shraddha Kapoor of "Aashiqui 2" has reportedly been approached to play the female lead. Confirming the news, senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai tweeted, "Rohit Shetty (Singam & Chennai Express fame) 2 remake Nalan Kumarasamy's #SoodhuKavvum in Hindi with Imran Khan and Shraddha Kapoor."
Rohit Shetty will be producing the film under his home production in association with A&PGroups and Rockline productions, which holds the remake rights for the film.
"Soodhu Kavvum" revolves around four misfit kidnappers, a politician's son and a psychopathic police officer, who handles an investigation about a kidnapping case.
The black comedy entertainer, which was released in May this year, opened to positive reviews from critics. The film earned over ₹50 crore at the worldwide box office and was declared a hit.
This is not the first time that Rohit Shetty is remaking a Tamil project. In the past, the "Golmaal" director remade Tamil super hit "Singam", starring Ajay Devgn in the role of a righteous cop. The film was a box office success and even joined the elite ₹100-crore club.
Rohit's last release "Chennai Express" created several records at the Indian box office. Following the film's stupendous success, expectations from the director have soared. Besides the remake of "Soodhu Kavvum", Rohit is also working in other couple of projects including "Singham 2" and "Golmaal 4."
The director will soon be engrossed with the pre-production of "Soodhu Kavvum" remake.
Rockline productions believe that "Soodhu Kavvum" has a universal concept that will be accepted in any language. Apart from Hindi, the film is expected to be remade in other regional languages, including Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
